3 Ways Employees Sabotage Their Performance Review

3 ways employees sabotage their performance review This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- . The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security. Top 10 Posts on Categories We’re just getting past the mid-year performance review cycle. Now the focus shifts to the year-end review. The important one with raises and bonuses. The truth is, employees do have an influence on their performance review ratings above and beyond performance on the job. You do perform well in your work on the job, right? Past that, though, employees make some mistakes thinking they cannot influence their performance review ratings. Here’s their biggest mistakes. Hey, if you don’t try, you leave your performance review fate to the whims of management. People who don’t even try to influence their performance review by doing anything past their great performance on the job literally give up on their work and the importance of what the work brings to the job. It is an abdication of control and influence. It is, in my opinion, giving up on yourself. Cubicle Warriors fight for every piece of results, pay, bonus and recognition they think they deserve. Your performance review, after all, sets the tone for your family’s budget, sanity in the face of layoffs, and shows that the results you produce for the business mean something. Even if that meaning is to future employers. If you don’t try, you lose. There is a difference between not trying to influence their performance review and leaving it the hands of their manager. When people leave their review in the hands of their manager, there is this belief that their manager will take care of them. That their manager, while not all-knowing, really does know all of the accomplishments the employee has done. That their manager will therefore rate them fairly. Meh. Managers are usually overworked. They know far less about what the person has done and what the person has accomplished in their business results than most people believe. I was a manager. I didn’t remember half the things my people did during the course of the year â€" I had 22 people reporting to me at one time in my career. You think I can remember all those accomplishments? No one can. As important, without evidence of your performance, your manager will get ripped in the meetings with other managers where your department’s performance rating is reviewed â€" and people are left with a good rating or downgraded based on your manager’s defense of your work. Can your manager defend your work in a room with other managers all wanting to protect their people? Yeah, leaving your fate in the hands of your manager is risk, risk, risk. If a five is outstanding and a 1 is close to getting fired, how many of you managers out there have seen employee after employee rate themselves as “outstanding” in virtually every category the performance review addresses? In my experience, about 25% rate themselves as walking on water, er, outstanding. The kicker? It’s usually the people who need a lot of improvement that rate themselves outstanding. Like if they give themselves a five and you thought they were a one, you’ll compromise with them and give them a “3” for successful. You can see these people a mile away. They do themselves no favors by doing this approach of perfection. Plus, it ticks the manager off because when someone rates themselves as outstanding across the board they also tend to argue about it with no proof. It can easily turn ugly, especially because the manager has to pull this person out of their fantasyland and return them to the reality in front of them. No easy task. You deserve the performance review rating that reflects your work. If you don’t provide the information to show how your work helps the business, you abdicate the most important business evaluation you get during the year. Let me give you a great example. I got some great performance numbers from one of my employees. Based on those numbers, I gave her a higher rating than she had for the previous five years. When the upper management team is trying to cut down the (budget) numbers, those ratings get questioned. If you’re mushy on your reasons for the rating (she is such a hard worker!), that rating gets blown out of the water. But in this case, using the numbers she provided, I easily said the reason for the rating was because she was the top person in the department for X and her improvement in the other department metrics was the highest out of the ten-person group. Thirty seconds it took. Rating preserved. For her, that defense gave her an $800 annual increase and a $2,800 bonus â€" for a mid-year review. You can try and influence your review and take that chance of getting what you deserve. Or you can abdicate your great work and hope others notice enough to defend your rating. Your choice. Sabotaging the performance review is like cheating in different form. Reply This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules â€" . The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security. policies The content on this website is my opinion and will probably not reflect the views of my various employers. Questions NOT to Ask During a Job Interview As you are preparing for your job interview and thinking of all the questions you will be asked, it can sometimes be difficult to remember how you should answer them and what they company may want to hear. It’s most important to think about how your skills and past achievements can align with the proposed job opportunity. At the same time, you know that you will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the interviewer and perhapsâ€"even some employees. For that portion of the interview, it will be important to assess the company culture, find out the ins and outs of the job, and think about why you may want to work there. Sometimes, we don’t think about the questions that SHOULDN’T be asked during the interview. It’s important to be interested in the company, but it’s also critical that you don’t make a major mistake during the interview. Read below for five questions that should definitely NOT be a part of your next interview. #1 â€" How quickly do people move up within the company? This shows that you are only using the job as a stepping stone. Even if this is true, you certainly don’t want it to appear that way. Asking this also shows a lack of respect for an internal progression within the company. #2 â€" What is your vacation policy? Again, do you want to appear as someone that is solely concentrated on your first vacation? No. Instead, you want to be an employee that is known for a diligent work ethic and a focus on getting the job done. #3 â€" Who is your target customer? Research is one of the most important things that you can do prior to an interview. Do NOT ask about a company’s mission statement, target customer, or service offerings when all of these things can easily be found online. If you ask these types of questions, it will look like you didn’t take the interview seriously and spent ZERO time preparing for it. #4 â€" Are employees eligible for discounts? Work With a Jerk Kill Them With Kindness

Work With a Jerk Kill Them With Kindness The saying kill them with kindness isnt only for corny motivational posters; the message itself can have a huge impact on life in the workplace. Whether youre working with a rude colleague or facing an awkward misunderstanding over email, dealing with difficult people is a task well all have to face at one stage or another. Instead of flying off the handle, killing the subject with kindness will not only knock them down a post or two, but also a paint you i a positive reflection, thanks to the positive reflection of your own communication abilities. So rip down those motivational posters and put the words into action with the following tips: Dont react irrationally Dealing with difficult colleagues can take its toll emotionally. If its been going on for a prolonged amount of time, its easy to snap and act to them as they do towards you. When it all gets too much, remind yourself that you are, in fact, the bigger person. Snapping back and being rude to a difficult colleague will only fuel the part of them that makes them act like this in the first place. Remember youre bigger and better than that react calmly, with a smile. https://twitter.com/k_halvorsen/status/735834091904479232 I am right, and they are wrong Genuine kindness doesnt come from a big ego, and acting kind as an end to a means wont help in the long run. Acting, and not genuinely feeling, will only fuel the anger you feel toward your colleague, because youll probably harbour the annoyance for a long time. Instead, its important to remember that when it comes down to it, you are in the right and they are in the wrong.  And by being polite, calm and professional, you can show the difficult person (and the rest of your colleagues!) that your opinion is valid and rational. This in itself will keep you feeling level-headed. be nice to people. it gets you far nicole ?? (@roadkvill) February 9, 2016 Detach yourself A good way to handle your reactions to a difficult colleague is to try and detach yourself from the given situation and attempt to look at it from an outsiders perspective. If a friend came to you for advice with  dealing with a difficult colleague, what advice would you give them? Sometimes its easier to dish out advice than it is to follow it, but trying to see from another persons  perspective can give you then insight you need in order to be kind to a difficult person. Sometimes you need to take your own advice. Cass (@sweetheartie) May 23, 2016 Who would you be more likely to work with? Instead of  hitting the roof over  a difficult employee, try and consider what type of person you would rather work with. Would it be  a rude and difficult employee  or  a polite, professional and nice one? When you are faced with a difficult colleague, keep this in mind as you respond. Killing them with kindness will not only show them up, but it will show your other colleagues your strengths when it comes to working with people. People would be more likely to want to work with you  rather than the  rude colleague in the future. Everybody is so grumpy at work right now and Im just tryna vibe and keep a semi positive attitude #posi Brittany Dwyer (@brit512x) May 29, 2016 Take it to HR (if you need to) Sometimes killing people with kindness can only go so far. If a certain person is making your working life extremely  difficult, sometimes its worth talking to a relevant HR manager or boss for advice or guidance. Have you ever had a bad experience with a colleague at work? Tell us how you killed them with kindness in the comments below. Main image credit: Shutterstock

Long Distance Job Search - VocationVillage

Long Distance Job Search - VocationVillage Dear Dr. Civitelli, I have a successful career in Boston earning a six figure income in a jack of all trades type executive position. I use some technical skills, some budget and financial skills, some strategic visioning skills, and some project management skills where I am the liaison between software developers and end users. My situation is that my wife and I desperately want to move to the West Coast, preferably to San Francisco. We have visited San Francisco multiple times and we really love it. My company has a branch office there, but I get the feeling that our home office would never support me transferring there because they value what I am already doing in the Boston location. My wife and I dont have a lot of connections on the West Coast and we dont know how to do a long distance job search. I dont see a lot of jobs advertised that would use the same skills that I have. It feels too financially risky to move there without a job. Do you have any suggestions for us?Signed, California DreamerSan Francisco, CA, USADear California Dreamer, It is absolutely possible for you to land a job in San Francisco but it may take some time as there are specific strategies I recommend that are not quick to implement. Here are some suggestions for a long distance job search:1. The single easiest way to move to San Francisco would be for the branch office there to recruit you. It sounds like this isnt going to happen unless someone with a significant amount of power there is willing to override the desire of the Boston staff to keep you where you are. So there is relationship building to do. Take any opportunity you have to attend conferences or trade shows with the San Francisco employees, to work on projects with them, and to interact with them any possible way (whether in person, via telephone, or via email). Recognize that each of these interactions is like a mini-interview. The more you can convince these people that their work lives would be better if you were working with them in San Francisco, the more likely someone will ta ke a chance on ruffling the feathers of the Boston executives by inviting you to join the San Francisco team.2. Your cover letter and resume should say you are relocating to San Francisco and your resume should have both a Boston address and a San Francisco address, along with a San Francisco phone number. It is easy to get the San Francisco phone number by buying a number from a company like Kall8. You can forward this phone number to any phone you like. The reason that I recommend this strategy is that I believe San Francisco hiring managers and recruiters have an unconscious or conscious preference to hire people who are already committed to living in San Francisco rather than people who are merely considering San Francisco.3. The reason long distance job searches can be tough is that companies prefer to hire local candidates who dont need to be reimbursed for interview travel and who dont need expensive relocation packages. If you really want to land a job in San Francisco, you have to make it easy for managers in San Francisco to meet you. This is a challenge since Boston and San Francisco are geographically far from each other, but look for opportunities to be in San Francisco so that you can say to decision-makers, I am going to be in San Francisco February 1st through 4th and I could meet with you then. (This dovetails with my recommendation in #1 to attend conferences near San Francisco and to work on projects with the San Francisco teamall your vacations for the next year could be in San Francisco, too!). As expensive as it can be to say this, you might also want to consider telling hiring managers, If the expense of relocation is an issue for your budget, I am willing to pay for that myself since my wife and I are certain that we want to relocate to San Francisco. If you do end up paying for this yourself, consult with a CPA to see whether it can be tax-deductible as there is a good chance that it will be.4. It is much easier to land a job if your f unctional area of expertise is clear. As you have seen in your current position, companies love it when existing employees have jack of all trades abilities because this makes you an excellent employee. However, hiring managers dont know what to do with generaliststhey tend to want to hire specialists. So your resume needs to give the appearance of more clarity than it probably has right now. If you have a favorite area of functional expertise, start to shape your career focus to strengthen that one. Join the major professional association for this specific niche, attend the main national conference, create a LinkedIn profile that highlights mostly this one niche, and start to network with people who work in this functional area. Also look online for professionals who work in this niche and notice the groups of which they are members because you can join those same groups. If you arent sure which niches are in demand, use free web sites like Indeed.com and JobFox.com to review job a ds to get a general feel for what types of positions are being advertised. Then create a resume that highlights your accomplishments around a specific focus rather than including everything that you have done.5. Sometimes contacts who arent even in your same line of work turn out to be the best connections for landing a new job. Join your colleges alumni association and consider being more active in the group. It might be someone from that organization who introduces you to your next employer. Leverage any hobbies or sports activities you enjoy to deepen your relationships with other like-minded people who live in or near San Francisco. The key is to be someone who others like and trust so much that they will recommend you to colleagues and hiring managers.Hope this helps!

15 Reasons Why I Love Being an Entrepreneur #MyStartupStory

15 Reasons Why I Love Being an Entrepreneur #MyStartupStory This post is a series of posts (Read post #1 here) in the #MyStartupStory movement that starts November 10th. We’ll be sharing the real life experiences of becoming an entrepreneur and helping you create your brand and website copy. Learn more here. Thinking of becoming an entrepreneur?  Its definitely not for everyone but here are some reasons I love being an entrepreneur.  15 Reasons Why I Love Being an Entrepreneur 1. If an emergency comes up I can stop work if I need to. 2. When my daughter is sick, I re-schedule my calls and snuggle her all day. No questions asked and I don’t have to worry about making sure my boss is ok. 3. I get to hang with my daughter during the day, watch her milestones, and then jump back to work at night when she’s sleeping. 4. I have freedom and flexibility. 5. I feel a huge sense of accomplishment and challenge that I didn’t have when I was in corporate. 6. We travel and work and spend days with our family. We can work later at night instead of being tied to my cubicle from 9-5. 7. I am happier. 8. I am making way more of an impact and am able to serve more than I did when I was in corporate. 9. I actually make more money now with less stress. 10. I have a better and more supportive network now than I did when I was in corporate. All the reasons I love being an entrepreneur. 11. In 2015,  we went on a road trip with my family and worked from the road. My husband is now the Chief Operating Officer of CCG so we just work from wherever we are. 12. I can make things happen in a day rather than wait for years like I did previously at my day job before my ideas were heard and initiated. 13. I am in charge of my own raises instead of waiting for my boss to give me a promotion.  I can get a raise next week by making a new product or service. 14. I feel fulfilled, challenged and like I am finally living a life of no regrets. We are making a difference by empowering women and that is what I love about what I do today. 15. I can implement my own systems and automation to make life easier rather than harder without getting approval from my boss or client. The picture is me speaking to a group of women at 8 months pregnant in 2014!! Luckily I was feeling great at that moment but I was definitely ready to start preparing for maternity leave as an entrepreneur. I actually built up a list of clients who wanted to talk to me while I was on maternity leave so that when I returned after a couple of months, I had one of my best launches ever in 2014. SO I am all about automation and systems and making life easier not harder. Do you want to be an entrepreneur too? I want to show you today where you could be.  So close your eyes with me right now and imagine your ideal workday running your own business. Imagine waking up when you want to wake up. Maybe you have some quiet time in the morning. Read a book, hang out with your children. Have some coffee. Think about how grateful you are for your amazing life. You stay in your pajamas, maybe do some work but it’s not work to you because you are so passionate about what you do. [RELATED: 5 Examples of Gratitude To Inspire You] Maybe you do a little yoga or exercise. Maybe go for a jog to get some energy for the workday. You actually can’t wait to jump on the computer and see what’s new with the business. What orders and money came through while you slept. What breakthroughs the people you are helping are having.  The impact you are making. You are finally living your purpose! You work a couple hours and then you go out to lunch with your girlfriends, maybe read a book or two to your kids and go to the park. You can work from home. This is us at our dining room tablebecause why not! You have more time to travel. Your kids look up to you and love how much time you have for them. You are accomplishing your goals. What is one thing you would do in your ideal workday as an entrepreneur? I hope you see what is possible for you and where you could be with some simple changes and decisions. But first, you have to hustle. This picture is a demonstration of my juggle in 2013. I had my work day job laptop on right side and my own laptop on the left side planning my next event back in 2013 while I was working at my parents house while on vacation….When you are hustling, it’s crazy right? Some of you know exactly what I mean. But here’s the thing, it’s not as hard to transition from employee to entrepreneur when you have a system and a business plan. Dont just trying a million things at once. If you can learn from someone else who has already done what you want, you can learn the mistakes that you don’t want to make and it will speed up your success. This is what happened to me and it can happen to you as well. The fact that you are reading this today shows determination. I know you can create your dream business and have the ideal lifestyle that you dreamed about just a second ago. Here’s the thing. You have to start taking action. This post is a series of posts in the #MyStartupStory movement that starts November 10th. We’ll be sharing the real life experiences of starting a business and helping you create your brand and website copy. Learn more here.

How to use POP on the Job - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to use POP on the Job - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There are a lot of measures of productivity. For some, that means just pure and raw output. For others it means the ability to use your EQ and IQ sometimes in proportion and sometimes not. No matter what everyone has Patterns of Productivity, aka POP. How do you make the most of your POP? In order to stand out in your career you will need to harness your POP. To succeed over the course of your careers (not a typo) you will want to take some time to understand your POP. Millennials will have 12-15 jobs (careers) in their lifetimes ~ Bureau of Labor Statistics Some of these are habits you may have developed in grade school and perfected through your high school and university years. Other traits may be more genetic. And, some will be driven by sheer willpower. What are your POP traits? What makes you tick? What POP attributes make you great at what you do? Can you use POP to build the career of your dreams? I think part of the answer lies in self-discovery and self-evaluation. Another part is not needed for everyone, but can really help some, is to have an objective 3rd party provide feedback on how they view your POP. One way to use self-evaluation is to look at POP like a journalist. To use the  old journalistic angle of approach by utilizing  the 5 Ws. You can use the 5Ws to think about your POP traits and to consider how you might best understand, evaluate, and optimize your POP. When When are you able to optimize your POP (aka POPtimize, if you will). This can be broken up into multiple stages. For example, some people have a much higher level of productivity in the morning. Others are in the evening or perhaps mid day. This is a feeder to your patterns of productivity. Think about the work you do and the times you think you do your best in those skills. Then seek to schedule time for those tasks when you are best at them. For me, I’m a better critical reader early in the morning. So, whenever possible I schedule time to read early in my day. Where Other patterns of productivity include where you like to work. For example if youre a writer you might like a quiet and secluded area. Or, perhaps youre a sociologist and you need to be out in the wild and looking at things. Picking the right location  is another part of the overall picture for your patterns of productivity. Who Who you work with is another aspect for your patterns of productivity. Some people work really well together in groups. And others work really well separately when they can focus and really pay attention to what theyre trying to do. So thinking about the who is another factor related to patterns of productivity. What What is another area related to your patterns of productivity. For example, if you are working on a particular kind of project you may enjoy having others chime in and put in their two cents. Other times theres work that requires thinking and will require somewhat more of an isolated mode of operation. So, choose what you are working on to optimize  your POP. Why It is important to know why you are working on something. If you don’t know why you may want to take a moment to consider if the task you are considering should even be done at all. If not, you may be able to instantly increase your productivity by eliminating something that doesnt need to be done (by you). He who knows others is wise; he who knows himself is enlightened. ? Lao Tzu My recommendation and suggestions are to: Take some time to think about your POP. What are your best POP traits? Think about what works for you. Then schedule your time to do more of them. And, finally, share your best practices here. Tell the world about your Patterns of Productivity and how you bring your best POP everyday.

Basic Skills For Resume Writing

Basic Skills For Resume WritingMedical writing skills for resume are of high importance and should be part of your skills. Writing resumes is a skill that is required by many companies and recruiters. This means that not only medical doctors can benefit from the skill, but they are also needed by nurses, physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, dentists, chiropractors, nurse practitioners, and other medical personnel. To keep up with the changing medical needs of the medical community, it is essential to hone your medical writing skills for resume. As in any field, there is competition among medical writers. There are many qualified writers who struggle to get published in the publications. Most people who are chosen to write a resume have to put in long hours to achieve this goal. Of course, no one is saying that you have to put in the same amount of time as the talented writers. You can have the same professional-looking resume at a much reduced cost if you use a medical resume w riter. Many medical professionals choose to submit their resumes to medical agencies, which help them meet their goals and help to get jobs in the fields they are interested in. Even if you already have a job, being able to write a resume is extremely important. This will give you a leg up on the competition when it comes to getting a job. Another advantage is that the resume will reflect well on your personality and offer you the best possible chance to be hired for the job you want. Some of the most basic and universal types of medical writing skills for resume include being polite, and using correct grammar. By taking care to write in an appealing manner, people will be more likely to want to read your resume and follow the instructions on the cover sheet or bylaw. It is also important to include a summary of what is to be included in the resume.Additionally, you need to consider what the document is really for. If it is for a job search, then the document is going to be addressed to employers. However, it may also be for a formal letter or notice to a prospective client, which will be addressed to a customer or patient. While you want to make the material as comprehensive as possible, you still want to avoid providing all of the information pertaining to medical records. People with personal health problems do not necessarily need to know about those problems and may not want to discuss them on a resume. You can leave out sections of information that are not relevant to the job opening, and you can also include a short section that explains why you are the right person for the job. For example, you might include a paragraph stating that you are a 'disaster-prevention specialist.'Most medical writers are highly qualified and skilled at creating high quality documents. Many people in the industry are employed by medical departments as well as companies and agencies that need medical resumes for research purposes. They are able to create custom-written resumes a nd document documentation that reflect the various needs of medical professionals. If you are considering hiring a medical writer, you should first check with the Human Resources department of the place where you work or if you work from home, to see if they have any vacancies. Do not be afraid to get multiple offers, and make sure that you meet with the professional before you choose them. Because some medical professionals are very busy, they may also charge you a fee to create your resume.
